New Sergio Rodrigues store in New York

One of my favorite Brazilian furniture designers is opening his first shop in New York at the ripe old age of 84! His chunky leather chairs are the epitome of comfort to look at as well as lounge in. I am very excited. Way to go, Sergio!!

NYTimes article reads...

"Sergio Rodrigues is in the enviable position of amassing a cult following while still alive. And at 84, the Brazilian designer shows no signs of stopping. Next week, he has a new store opening in New York, his first in this country in more than 40 years. (His previous store, OCA, in Carmel, Calif., closed in 1968.)
The 2,000-square-foot space, Espasso Sergio Rodrigues, will occupy the lower level of Espasso, a TriBeCa shop specializing in Brazilian design. It will initially carry 17 of Mr. Rodrigues’s pieces. “To just have one or two pieces doesn’t tell the story of Sergio, because he has designed so many things,” said Carlos Junqueira, Espasso’s owner. “But I’m not putting everything in at one time.”
Prices range from $1,450 for the Mocho stool to $16,700 for the Mole sofa (the Mole chair, pictured, is $10,150, and the stool is $3,100). Espasso Sergio Rodrigues, 38 North Moore Street (Hudson Street), (212) 219-0017 or espasso.com. "

Grand Palais with K Lagerfeld...

I love love love the Grand Palais. Karl Lagerfeld clearly does too as all of the Chanel shows are there. I've been looking at Casamidy all day. The Manchez chair could be great for a Grand Palais with Karl Lagerfeld inspired room...

I feel like I have lost this commitment of the social purpose of design and architecture. I hope the winds will change soon and somehow my commitments will reflect my best heart...

life outside of the city

I am really about to pull my hair out from getting city stir crazy. It's really pretty depressing this time. My passport has even expired. I have been really poor being in design school for the last three years and now on a designer's salary, it doesn't get much easier to splurge on world travel.
Thank heavens to my wonderful friends with a truck - Suzanne and Sam. Whether it's a simple drive up to Greenpoint or a little further, up the Hudson, I love a chance to get outside of normal life with them.
Here is a custom card that Suzanne made me for my birthday. She hand stitches them. I love this card because she made it, and also because it is a testament to our wonderful day at Storm King...

signs of life

If there's ever something missing in a room for color or vibrance, it's usually plants and books.
It is not a coincidence that they are also both indicators of human vitality and natural life in a room.

Positano

I need a vacation. Traveling back to Positano would be nice. The nostalgic feeling I have for this place makes my stomach queezy.

Joel Sternfeld

I was browsing the website of the art gallery, Luhring Augustine, and came upon their photographer, Joel Sternberg. I find him to be completely amazing. His images depicted a person who is curious about and moved by both the natural environment and society. The images strike a mood where justice, peace, tragedy, hope and horror coexist and find balance.

Below are some examples from his series called, High Line. These pictures were taken between 2000 and 2001, before the High Line was changed into what it looks like today. (photos from Luhring Augustine)

winter fire

John Galliano for Dior. (nytimes/Valerio Mezzannoti credit) I love the cool grey and blue moments with the most luscious red. This is the image of the powerful woman I lately have remembered I am. (Thanks to "The Vassar Girl" video on YouTube for reminding me.)

This also reminds me of my new nail polish that I bought the other day. Lacquer "Too Red" from RGB . Love love lacquer.

And my favorite winter spot for a happy hour Mai Tai and pork buns and a warm window seat. Chinatown Brasserie.
