New Yorker outdoes itself

Best issue of the New Yorker in a long time. My friend, Maya, and I agreed on this last night. There are 3 absolutely fascinating articles in there.

1. Mark Zuckerberg - facebook CEO profile. relevant and interesting
2. J Crew CEO piece - amazing profile of this man. inspiring
3. Tavi piece - 14yr old fashion blogger profile. ive loved her for years. this article really paints an interesting picture and speculates about her future. good stuff.

Seriously. If you still have this issue, check it out.

nice and tough

Love this greenery peeking out from the brick, metal and iron. Found on a walk in Ft. Greene today. This soft and hard combo is a fitting symbol for this hood generally.

Blingy

I love gold bling.

Roman and Williams

Their work is inspiring but their philosophy is ultimately what makes me a follower.
This video about them is incredible.

online mag: The Scout

loving. here is their "about us". So me.

The Scout is a new lifestyle and design-conscious site highlighting unique events, retail and dining experiences in New York City.
Unlike other city guides and online magazines, The Scout will feature reviews and articles by your intrepid team of culture-seekers who will weed out the mundane and the overly trendy to bring you the very best, the most unique, and the most inspiring that the city has to offer, with an eye to both the modern and the traditional, the high-end and the humble. Our writers and editors appreciate the craftsmanship of Danish modern furniture but still lust after a pair of limited-edition Nikes. We’ll scarf down a decadent deep-fried hot dog one night and indulge in a perfect chocolate souffle the next.
Featuring themed self-guided tours, restaurant and store reviews, frequent blog postings and in-depth articles and interviews, The Scout will become a trusted guide for readers looking for something original and uncommon. With The Scout, you’ll get customized, uniquely edited content that shares the stories behind products, events and their creators.

the science: Smith & Mills

Why, why, why? Why am I dying to try this new bar, Smith & Mills in Tribeca? Well, we all know it's not because of the drinks (I always get a wheat beer), so clearly, it's about the interiors. My sister suggested that on the blog, I break down my design loves more scientifically, so here goes.

Why it works:
1. simple palette but complex in texture. i love when something is interesting to touch not just to see
2. tufting (the buttons pressed into the leather upholstery) which is formal, combined with casual, weathered flooring and ceiling treatment. i love this juxtaposition. very ying/yang and makes a space ultimately feel balanced.
3. warm residential lighting. like the sconce choice. not big overhead pieces. keeps it low key
4. plants/greenery - always nice and inviting
5. banquettes - look comfy! a place i'd like to spend a while at. not too formal. good for friends
6. vaulted ceiling - again another cozy touch because you feel like you're in a cellar or some nostalgic, old world, setting

Tacklebox - Saipua in Red Hook

This firm, Tacklebox, is really cool. They did this great little soap shop in Red Hook and also the Phillip Lim 3.1 store in Soho. Actually my client for the second fashion exhibition last year brought me pictures of Saipua as an example of something she liked and aspired to. architecture and water

I find water very soothing and thought provoking. I don't think it's a mistake that memorable and iconic architecture is often integrated with water in either a grand or quiet way.

Mies van der Rohe - Barcelona Pavlion

Santiago Calatrava - Planetarium in Valencia, Spain

Frank Ghery - Guggenheim Bilbao - Bilbao, Spain

Louis Kahn - National Assembly Building - Bangladesh

Frank Lloyd Wright - Falling Water - Bear Run, PA
